MUSIC, DANCING, LATKAS, & A CELEBRATION OF SOCIAL JUSTICE LEADERS HIGHLIGHT THE 2ND ANNUAL BAY AREA EVENT, PRODUCED IN ASSOCIATION WITH NOISE POP

December 14, 2006

Golem, The Conspiracy Of Beards, DJ Anaan, and special guests

The Independent, 628 Divisadero St, SF CAPlus High Stakes Charity Dreydl$12 in advance / $15 day of show 21+8PM Doors, Cocktails and Latkas
The night starts with Cocktails and Latkas upstairs in the Independent Balcony. Then, turn the Festival of Lights into the Festival of Rights with a unique menorah lighting by local social justice activists, during which they'll share a "right" they fight for. Past lightings have included Gordon Mar of the Chinese Progressive Association, Mike Casey of Unite Here union, and Rabbi Dorothy Richman.

Eastern European folk-punk auteurs Golem (named after the legendary Jewish Frankenstein of Prague) will take the stage with a live performance that will electrify the night and whip crowds into a singing, dancing frenzy. Golem's racked up early raves for their electrifying sophomore LP Fresh Off Boat (released August 22nd on JDub Records), a motley, multi-lingual brew of Jewish, Slavic, and Gypsy music played with the abandon of a New York punk band. "The group's sultry bounce practically insists that you dance along" -Time Out NY

The Conspiracy Of Beards, based in San Francisco, are a 30 member a cappella male choir that exclusively performs the songs of Leonard Cohen. Inspired by late artist Peter Kadyk and directed by Daryl Henline, the group performs gritty yet uplifting renditions of Cohen's songs. Started in 2003 by Henline and Patrick Kadyk, the group has performed to enthusiastic audiences around the Bay Area including SFMOMA, Café Du Nord and the NPR program West Coast Live.

Throughout the night, participants can buy chips to gamble their way through High Stakes Charity Dreydl. Prizes will be given out to the highest grossing dreydl-ers and include a night for two at the Healdsburg Hotel. Chip purchases will benefit The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, an Oakland-based non-profit that promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration through cutting-edge campaigns and initiatives.

The Lower Haight is having it's first street fair this year on Sunday, October 22nd from 11am to 6pm on Haight Street between Fillmore and Pierce. I wouldn't miss the first block party in my hood. Should be great.
